Hodgepodge
–>listen to Wilbur
–>say I can help
Wilbur asks, “It used to be so normal around here, until the magic came.
Now everything feels so different. I just don’t know what to do about it.
The animals collided and created new animals. Mundane objects came to
life, and even worse, the people have changed. I have no idea who I can
trust. Oh woe is me, whatever shall I do?”
Wilbur says, “So, you’re up for it? Well. Maybe you actually can – someone
has to! First you need something to protect yourself from this wild magic.
I don’t have anything for you, so you need to go get it yourself. I hear
Murfee has been able to resist being changed completely.”
** Goal Added : Tame the Magic
Type ‘goals hodgepodge’ for full details on this quest.
** Task Added : Magic has gone wild! It’s up to you to fix it.
** Task Added : Find something to protect yourself from the magic.
– jig murf
You grab Murfee by the arm and together dance a wild, drunken jig!
Murfee grabs you closer and whispers, ‘Wilbur sent you? All I can tell
you is… the little pig squeals at midnight!’
Murfee glances around. ‘That’s all I can say. Hopefully those lovely foxy
doxies can help you more.’
-give 3000 gold fox
You give 3,000 gold to a pair of foxy doxies.
A pair of foxy doxies winks suggestively at you.
The foxy doxies whisper something to one another. Suddenly, the green-haired
one whisks you off into a strange waltz. You hear a very large creak and turn
around to see what it is. The purple-haired doxy is straining with all her
might to keep some floorboards lifted. The breath is heaved from your body
as the green-haired doxy lands a solid kick into your back.
A pair of foxy doxies exclaims, “Annnd here you go!”
Secret Hideout
[ Exits: none ]
A shifty bootlegger lurks in the shadows.
THUNK!
THUNK!
You land heavily in a dark, damp room. You sense that you are not alone.
– say the little pig squeals at midnight
The bootlegger looks at you appraisingly. He leans back against the wall
and says, ‘Is that so?’
A shifty bootlegger says, “Well. I have just the preservative for you.”
He gives you a much-patched cape.
A shifty bootlegger exclaims, “Wear it always, or the magic will change
you!”
The bootlegger shoves you out unceremoniously.
– wear cape
– visit Wilbur again
Wilbur says, “Oh, good! That will do the trick.”
Wilbur sighs.
Wilbur says, “The knights were supposed to help us. They’ve shown they’re
good for nothing! Can’t even keep their heads on straight. They always
listened to the princess…”
Wilbur says, “You, there! Persuade the knights to help.”
** Task Done : Find something to protect yourself from the magic.
** Task Added : Sort out the knights.
– listen knight
A knight of the Wanaeatawalnut Order says, “Don’t worry. I shall protect
these lands from the magic that caused all this mayhem! Fear not, for if
it shall return we will defeat it.”
– listen Sergeant
The Sergeant of the Knights says, “We lost the princess’s favor…
*sigh*”
– say princess
The Sergeant of the Knights says, “I feel like I am missing
something…”
The sergeant looks around woefully.
The Sergeant of the Knights says, “I can almost remember what it is.”
The Sergeant of the Knights sighs.
You can almost hear the wheels turning as the sergeant tries to focus his thoughts.
The Sergeant of the Knights says, “It was just a piece of cloth, but it
was very special.”
– find Ema in the Sewing Room
– open basket
– get all basket
– give dress serg
You give a scrap of a dress to the Sergeant of the Knights.
The Sergeant gasps as he takes the scrap from you.
The Sergeant of the Knights says, “I’ve been looking all over for this.
It’s the princess’s favor, which she gave to me long ago. It shows how
much she trusts me. She gave it to me once, torn from her very own dress,
as good luck in a tournament.”
You bring the sergeant up to speed, explaining that the princess is missing.
The Sergeant of the Knights says, “Eh? What? That’s the first I’ve heard
about that! If such a thing happened, we would know. But, I suppose we can
never be too careful.”
The Sergeant of the Knights asks, “Well. If you want to chase this
fantasy, it’s up to you, but she’s a cautious person. If what you say is
true – and, I will give you the benefit of the doubt, then you will need
this to prove yourself worthy of her trust. But, really, don’t you think
I’d know about it?”
The Sergeant of the Knights says, “I think that… I think that she lost
her pig before all of this happened. I bet she’d be very grateful if you
could find him. But, just in case, keep this close to your heart.”
The sergeant presses the princess’s favor into your hands.
– visit hermit
A bunch of kids glance at you, then move into a tight huddle. You hear the
words ‘truffle’ and ‘pig’ said excitedly while another kid shushes him,
glancing at you. You hurriedly try to hide yourself.
The leader of the pack glares at some underbrush. Holding something black
in his hand, he hisses, ‘This should do the trick…’
The kid creeps up slowly to a mysterious noise in the underbrush. He grunts
as he lunges at something. You hear a squeal and a loud noise rustling in
the underbrush. ‘Darn it!’ he says.
A purple platypus arrives from the north.
You shift and duck to try to see where the pig might have gone. The kid
suddenly sees you. ‘What, you think you can do better?’ the kid demands.
‘Yeah? You want to try? Go ahead and try to find him! All I’ve ever
wanted is a pet pig. Stupid things, I can’t seem to catch them, no matter
what I do! This one must be awfully spoiled – maybe it’s the princess’s.
They like all fancy-schmancy things. Probably off moping about how the
princess doesn’t feed him treats anymore!’
– find a winter truffle lying on the ground
– kill a guy carrying his wife’s purse for sweet truffle
– yellow truffle is inside the root of the tree
– savory truffle from killing a pig near the entrance
– lure pig
– give the pig to the servant
You give a squirming piglet to a rather grubby servant.
The princess gasps, ‘Thank you, brave heart! How on earth did you know
that my little piggy was missing?’
The grubby princess says, ‘Oh, never mind that! Hey, what’s that? I
didn’t give that to you! Thank you for returning my little Piggly
Wiggly, but you’ll have to do more than that to get my favor.’
The princess takes the favor that the sergeant lent you.
The grubby princess tells you, ‘You must be wondering what happened
to me – how one such as I am now assigned to cleaning the toilets.
It’s the same as what’s happened to the rest of my family. My royal
parents have been deposed, and I have become no more than, than, a
common maid!’ She nearly spits the word common, then continues, ‘Oh,
whatever shall I do? I can’t stand this smell much longer!’
The princess looks thoughtful.
The princess says, ‘Well! We’ll just have to do something about that,
then, won’t we? Take me to the sergeant!’
You hear a yell from down the hall. The princess looks extremely annoyed.
The princess grumbles and says, ‘I can’t go. You’ll have to do this.
Here, I’ll write a letter for you to bring to the sergeant.’ The
princess leans in close and whispers to you, ‘You might have to read
it to them.’
Looking at you dubiously, she asks, ‘You can read, right?’
You hear the voice from down the hall again, this time, louder. The
princess yells, ‘I’m coming, just a minute!’
She glances around and hurriedly grabs a piece of paper and produces a pen
seemingly out of nowhere. She starts scribbling furiously, and shoves the
letter into your hand.
‘What are you waiting for? Go!’ she demands.
– go to sergeant and read the letter
You clear your throat and glance at its contents and are suddenly very
happy that this is not a letter written to you, but feeling miserable that
you are the one to deliver it. You begin to read.
The knights wince. Dutifully, you continue.
They start to look around uncomfortably, as if at any moment the princess
might jump out at them.
You glance up from the letter, glad to have it over with.
The sergeant glances around. His fellows refuse to look up, and the sole
one that isn’t staring at the floor and looking embarrassed seems to be
afflicted with some strange disease.
The Sergeant of the Knights says, “I think… I think we’ll just leave
this in your hands. Just go see the old king and queen and tell them they
can rely on you. Yes. I’m sure you will do well.”
You feel gills growing on your neck!
The knights calm and look far more relaxed.
You wonder what else you’ve managed to get yourself into.
** Task Done : Sort out the knights.
** Task Added : Restore the king and queen
– go to king
– say you can rely on me
‘I’m here to save you!’ you state proudly, flexing your muscles.
Elijah exclaims, “Finally!”
Elijah says, “I’m sure you’ve gathered by now that our poor town is in
dire straits. Everything is all wrong! The toilet paper talks, the
seamstress is a cook, the cook is a seamstress, our cows lay eggs… I can
go on and on.”
Elijah sighs.
Elijah says, “I’m no mage myself. I’ve no idea if I could do anything even
if I were! My wife and I are hanging onto knowledge of ourselves by a
thread.”
The king peers at you closely. The queen whispers something to him and elbows him sharply.
Elijah asks, “Fix it! The poor townspeople. They cry for their rightful
rulers! What do those peasants know about managing a town, anyway?”
Elijah exclaims, “Oh. You know that hermit out in the woods? Well, he
lives there because we once tried to burn him at the stake for using
magic. See where magic gets you? Dangerous stuff. Maybe he can help you.
But I didn’t say that!”
– listen hermit
Harold, the popular hermit says, “Welcome! Welcome! I’m so glad you can
make it. Our picnic is a potluck, so you better not come empty-handed.”
– kill egg
– back to hermit
– give salad hermit
You give some egg salad to Harold, the popular hermit.
Harold, the popular hermit exclaims, “Oooh, this will do nicely!”
The hermit arranges the egg salad next to the rest of the picnic.
Harold, the popular hermit says, “So you’ve heard about the attempted
stake burning incident? Well… yes, it is all true. I used magic and the
king decided it would be a fine idea to burn me. Fortunately, my friends
here doused me and here I am, in this lovely little glade with all the
visitors a hermit could want.”
Harold, the popular hermit says, “So, you need my help now. I will need
several components for the spell. I will need something untouched by
magic, something from the palace, and a personal effect of the true king.
Now, run along.”
– go to king
– say Harold
Elijah exclaims, “I don’t trust Harold one bit!”
Elijah says, “Fine. If it’s necessary, then here.”
The king starts pulling at his beard.
A knight of the Wanaeatawalnut Order leaves south.
Elijah lowers its head while drawing in a deep breath and lets out a resounding “GRRRUUUUUNT!!!”
Elijah asks, “There, you happy?”
You receive a graying beard from Elijah.
– get compost from the Veggie Patch room
– go to waiting room
Bernard exclaims, “Their royal majesties will not grant an audience to
those without style. Leave!”
** Task Added : Get an audience with the peasant king and queen.
– visit hermit
Miss Missy Boo says, “Poor thing. Turned away at the gates, were you? I
don’t blame them – you’re really behind the times.”
Miss Missy Boo sits down and thinks deeply.
Miss Missy Boo says, “My friend Thimble was an excellent seamstress before
she started cooking. We go way back. Just let her know that I sent you and
she should be able to bake something.”
– go to Thimble
– say Missy Boo sent me
Thimble looks you over critically.
Thimble says, “Well, Miss Missy Boo was right to send you to me. Just look
at you. I can’t turn nothing into something, though.”
Thimble looks you up and down.
Thimble says, “We’ll need a skirt, oh, and something for the top. And
perhaps a cape to fill in the back. Wouldn’t want you to get cold, hm?
Come back when you’re ready to bake.”
With that, Thimble goes back to baking.
– kill penguin for skirt and bra
– buy cape from shop
– go to thimble
– say i am ready to bake
Thimble says, “What’s this? Oh, I can whip up something with those, no
problem! Here, give them to me.”
You hand over the skirt, bra, and cape.
Thimble begins humming to herself. The noise lulls you into daydreaming.
A huge **CRACK** brings you back to yourself. You watch in horror as
Thimble dropped a pan… that had your clothes in it?!
Thimble exclaims, “Just a moment longer!”
Thimble says, “There we are! Just needs a few finishing touches. Emma will
be able to help you with that. Run along, now.”
Thimble gives you a rather disgusting looking article of clothing.
– go to Emma
Emma says, “Mmm. Could use some work. I’ll fix it up.”
Emma starts measuring you and mutters to herself, ‘Thimble really fell
down on the job here! This doesn’t even fit properly!’
Emma says, “A little bit of this…”
Emma says, “A little bit of that…”
Emma dips the whole thing into a vat of sparkles and pulls it out
triumphantly.
Emma says, “There we go! Wear it in good health.”
You receive an extremely ugly suit from Emma.
– wear suit
– go to throne room
Inalan, the peasant queen asks, “Welcome! Are you here to see the
gardens?”
– say yes
Inalan, the peasant queen says, “Water them while you’re at it, then.”
A lackey hands you a dented watering can.
You receive a dented watering can from Inalan, the peasant queen.
– go to garden
– water garden
You water the flowers carefully, paying extra attention to the poor wilted
ones.
A wilted flower perks up, smiling at you happily. Shaking itself gently,
some fragrant leaves fall to the ground. You pick them up.
– go to hermit
– say I have everything
Harold, the popular hermit says, “You really expect me to continue to help
you with the king and queen after they tried to burn me? I didn’t
actually think you’d come up with everything. Now, you’re going to have to
make it worth my while.”
– give 1000 gold hermit
You give 1,000 gold to Harold, the popular hermit.
Harold, the popular hermit asks, “What’s this?”
Harold, the popular hermit says, “Oh, you have everything! Let’s get
started then.”
Harold grumbles something under his breath. You catch the word ‘king’ and ‘substandard’.
Harold retreats into a small shelter in the bushes.
A hiss and a yelp come from the shelter. Harold emerges, his hair slightly
singed.
Harold, the popular hermit says, “Use that, and things should be right
again. I have some extra ingredients. Let me know if you need another.”
You receive a strange scroll from Harold, the popular hermit.
Harold, the popular hermit snickers at his own evil thoughts.
** Task Done : Restore the king and queen
** Task Done : Get an audience with the peasant king and queen.
** Task Added : Tame the magic!
– go down the well
– tame the magic
A high-pitched, near ear-shattering wail pierces the air.
The pit becomes suddenly very, very warm.
A light nearly as bright as the sun flashes suddenly! You shield your eyes.
A loud *CLAP* sounds, leaving your ears ringing.
A heaviness of the air that you had not noticed earlier seems to ease.
Smoke emanates from your cape. You hurriedly tear it off and watch it melt
into the floor.
A Small Cobblestone Path
[ Exits: north south ]
(G) Wilbur is complaining of the changes.
Ouch! You bang your head on the ground and find yourself looking at a pair
of boots.
Someone hauls you to your feet. Rubbing your eyes, you can barely make out Wilbur… singing?
Wilbur grabs your hand and spins you around. ‘Oh, I knew, just knew that
we could count on you! The king and queen are restored!’ he says happily.
‘Here, take this!’ Wilbur hands you something pink. ‘Take good care of it,
it is the princess’s very own!’
Wilbur’s shifty eyes dart back and forth.
Wilbur breathes a sigh of relief.
An enormous clap sounds throughout the town. A huge voice booms, ‘Not for long!’
Your stomach churns as the landscape ripples.
Oh no, looks like the magic’s returned in full strength!
Wilbur’s mouth drops open and then he wheels on you. He snarls, ‘You
useless twit!’
